Our latest release is the Atlas of the Mammals of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Based on more than 1.8 million records, the Atlas provides the most up-to-date information on the current distributions of both terrestrial and marine mammals in the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. Many changes over time, such as the rapid invasion of the grey squirrel, the recovery of the pine marten and the decline of the water vole, are readily apparent from the detailed maps.
Fully illustrated with photographs, detailed information is provided for 84 species, including descriptions of their ecology and identification, together with graphs showing the seasonal distribution of records. Data are also presented for feral species, vagrants, and cetaceans that have only ever been found as strandings. The Atlas is an invaluable source of information to mammal enthusiasts, professional ecologists, and policy makers.
The Atlas is available to buy NOW from Pelagic Publishing RRP £35.00.

Guidance documents
The Mammal Society has started to publish a new series of practitioner guidance documents to provide the evidence base for informed decision-making by ecological consultants, planners, competent authorities and developers.
The Water Vole Mitigation Handbook
This publication aims to promote best practice amongst ecological consultants in undertaking surveys, and in designing and implementing mitigation measures for water voles. It is also intended to guide and inform decision makers to ensure that the survey information provided, and mitigation measures proposed, are appropriate. A flowchart is provided in Appendix 7 to assist those reviewing planning applications. The guidance set out in this document should be considered to be ‘interim’ guidance. It will be revised as required to take account of relevant new evidence.

Dormouse boxes from Kent Mammal Group
These well-made and designed dormouse boxes are great value and are made exclusively from sustainably sourced British birch wood. The boxes come ready assembled, so can be used directly they are received. It is useful to “weather them” slightly to help them to blend into their surroundings, particularly if they are being placed within a habitat that pedestrians use frequently.
Each box costs £12 plus postage of £1.50 a box (mainland UK – please enquire about postage to locations outside the UK).
£1 from the sale of each box will be donated to the Mammal Society. To order please email sales@kentmammalgroup.org.uk. To ensure that the Mammal Society benefits from your purchase please be sure to include the reference “Mammal Society” in the subject heading.
