Welcome to the Mammal Society
The British Isles are home to many species of mammal, from the common shrew to the grey seal. Unfortunately one in four of these mammals are threatened with extinction, with many others in decline, as found by our 2020 Red List for Britain’s Mammals. At the Mammal Society we are working to give the mammals of the British Isles a brighter future.
Get to know us
Established in 1954 we are a UK based charity devoted to the study and conservation of the mammals of the British Isles. We aim to raise awareness of the issues mammals face and share our scientific research so they can be best protected in the future. Although a small team we are mighty, and are dedicated to helping mammals across the nation.

How you can help our charity
Unlike most other organisations monitoring British wildlife, we receive no central government funding for our core work. Our activities to halt the decline of threatened species, monitor their conservation status and advise on issues affecting British mammals depend entirely on the generosity of our supporters!
