Training Courses

Our training courses are for everyone, from interested individuals, to conservationists and ecological consultants, who want to develop their knowledge, field skills and experience for personal interest or professional development. From species introduction courses, to practical field-craft weekends, mammal identification and survey techniques, we focus on ecology & biology, law, technical skills, handling & surveying. Click the image of our 2018 brochure to view it.  We can also arrange bespoke courses for groups. For more information email training@themammalsociety.org.

For the one day courses, please bring a packed lunch and suitable clothes. Tea and coffee will be provided.

All our courses are also listed on countryside-jobs.com where you can also find more environmental jobs and courses.

Meet our trainers here. We are always looking for new trainers, if you think you have what it takes email using the email address below. If you are a trainer and you have a course you would like us to run please complete this form.

For any further information or if you are interested in a mammal related subject we don’t already cover, please contact our training officer Jackie Wells at training@themammalsociety.org or 02380010984

Yorkshire Naturalists' Union Conference

April 7, 2018 9:00 am – 5:30 pm

The Yorkshire Naturalists’ Union conference will be held on Saturday 7th April 2018 in the Ron Cooke Hub, University of York, on the theme of ‘Non-native species: research, recording and the conservation agenda.’

The morning session will discuss the research and recording of non-native species, including horizon scanning and international collaboration, new surveillance techniques and technology, the role of citizen science and the resources available to support identification and recording, from checklists and ID guides to websites and apps.  This session will begin with a keynote talk by Professor Helen Roy from the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology.   Helen’s research focuses on the effects of environmental change on insect populations and communities, particularly the dynamics of invasive non-native species and their effects on biodiversity. Helen has led several major citizen science initiatives, coordinated key projects to improve the accessibility of data on non-native species and co-authored the popular Field Guide to Invasive Plants and Animals in Britain (Bloomsbury, 2015).

The afternoon session will focus on the management of non-native species and the implications for biodiversity conservation.  The keynote address will be delivered by Professor Chris Thomas, University of York, who has carried out extensive research on why and how species respond to climate change and to the arrival of non-native species, which can result in biodiversity gains as well as losses.  Chris has had strong influence on conservation policy and practice; with his research group he has developed conservation strategies that will enable species to survive in a time of rapid environmental change.

Both sessions will include a range of talks presenting case studies of research, recording and conservation – there is sure to be something of interest to everyone!  Throughout the day there will be natural history displays, book sales and plenty of time for networking.

Conference tickets are £25 for YNU members and £30 for non-members.  This includes the conference lunch and refreshments.

Location: Ron Cooke Hub, University of York, Heslington East Campus, YO10 5GE

- Fully Booked- Grassland Water Vole Ecology and Mitigation

April 12, 2018 9:30 am – 4:00 pm

This one day course will provide practical training on the identification of grassland (also known as fossorial) water voles field signs, survey guidelines and trapping techniques. Water voles are frequently recorded in grassland habitat across their global range, however, in the UK it has long been thought they exist exclusively in wetlands. In 2008, urban populations of water voles living in grassland patches came to light and further studies have revealed high density populations living along the M8 corridor, park and derelict sites. It is considered likely that grassland-dwelling behaviour is far more common in the UK than we previously thought. The course will include a workshop on mitigation to discuss the most up to date thinking on managing the impact of development on these populations and also a visit to a nearby site with known grassland populations of water voles.

An Introduction to Urban Mammals

April 28, 2018 N/A

This one day event is a fascinating introduction to urban mammals, delivered by Suzanne Kynaston. The course looks at the key mammal species which can be observed in our urban environments, their identification by sight and typical signs. It will also include an overview of their ecology, their importance and current threats to their populations and how these can be minimised. It will conclude by giving an insight into how we observe and record UK urban mammals, including traditional trapping methods, footprint tunnels and camera traps.

Event Region: North East

Event Description: Become a nature detective with the Hawk and Owl Trust. Dissect barn owl pellets to find out what small mammals have been on the menu. Was it two mice, a shrew, a bank vole perhaps? Discover how skulls, jawbones and other tiny body parts can offer clues. (Don't worry - an owl pellet isn't poo! They are balls of undigested material regurgitated from its beak). Drop-in at Ravenscar Visitor Centre.Event Web
