CSI Live! Harbour Porpoise Post Mortem
–
January 9, 2018
This January North Wales Mammal Group bring you an unique opportunity to watch the post mortem of a Harbour Porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) collected from the coast of North Wales. Watch in real time as experts from the Zoological Society London Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme (CSIP) demonstrate how vital information is gathered and analysed, how the cause of death is determined, and what this unique research can tell us about the impact of humans on cetaceans in UK waters. The demonstration will follow an introductory presentation. During the post mortem there will opportunity to ask questions and join into discussion about the programme, marine mammals and the threats they face.
The Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme (CSIP) was launched in 1990 to coordinate the investigation of all cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises), marine turtles and basking sharks that strand around the UK coastline. On average around 600 cetaceans strand around the UK every year and the CSIP team carry out post-mortems on a proportion of these to investigate the causes of death, so we can learn more about these species in UK waters.
Please be aware that the evening features a post-mortem being conducted in real time in front of you. Because of the nature of the procedure please be prepared to see blood, internal organs and dissection. If you are under 16 and wish to attend we ask that you bring an adult with you.
