The Mammal Society produces a range of eminent publications about mammals, techniques for studying them and information on their conservation. Some are available with membership subscription, and some can be bought from our online shop.

Mammal News

The Society's colourful and informative magazine is sent to all members three times a year. In addition to keeping you up to date with what is happening in The Society and how you can join in, it also contains feature articles about mammals at home and abroad, some of the latest mammal news and discoveries and, specifically for ecological consultants, a section on survey techniques, mitigation methods and case law. Mammal Review

The Society's international scientific journal, published quarterly by Wiley Blackwell, contains research and review papers covering all aspects of mammalian biology and ecology. Its articles are included in over 20 abstracting and indexing services. Aimed mainly at biologists or ecologists, Mammal Review is availble to any member paying the appropriate subscription. Please visit Wiley-Interscience to find out more about the journal, including how to submit an article.

Mammal Notes

These are short papers (no more than 2000 words) on original research, which are of particular interest to mammalogists, but not of sufficient size to appear in Mammal Review. Articles that describe and evaluate new mammal research techniques are always welcome. They are peer reviewed and published electronically - please see our Mammal Notes page for a list of articles and author guidelines.

Mammals of the British Isles Handbook; 4th edition

The fourth edition of the Handbook is a substantial 800-page full colour hard-back publication, available from our shop here. This recently published (2008) reference book was written in collaboration with numerous experts in their fields and was edited by Stephen Harris and Society president Derek yalden. It includes a fullly comprehensive account of over 100 mammal species found in the British Isles.

Mammal Identification Guides and Species Booklets

These guides have been developed for individual species and are published by the Mammal Society. All are comprehensive and well illustrated, and more details can be found in the Shop. There are also booklets on mammal techniques, such as operating live traps in a humane fashion, together with handy fold-out guides to take into the field in search of mammals and their signs.
